Description Supervisor II is a system for locating and communicating bi-directionally with internal pipeline work and survey systems. The system is presently in use in the Offshore Oil and Gas Industry for the Command, Control of and Communication with a number of innovative internal pipeline systems and is approved for use by Det Norske Veritas. The system employs electromagnetic techniques developed by TUE(Systems) over the past 10 years and is now generally accepted as the Industry Standard for this type of Control and Communication System. The use of ELFEM techniques coupled with our unique data encoding technique allows reliable Communication through thick wall pipelines constructed from any material and installed in any surrounding medium with very benign error rates. The importance of total system reliability is reflected in the standard of engineering employed in the construction and testing of the system together with the incorporation of a policy of dual redundancy of all key system elements.

Graphical System Description For the purposes of this specification we refer to the system being installed in a Remote Pipeline Isolation Plug. The following simplified systems diagrams show the essential components of the system in both Location and Communication modes. Both modes of operation are outlined by the following simplified graphics:- GRAPHIC 1 LOCATION MODE (BELOW)
When the plug is launched a high powered ELFEM transmitter is initiated. This transmits a periodically interrupted signal through the pipewall. On the Subsea Control module an array of receivers detects this signal from the approaching plug and computes its precise position in the target area such that the position of the plug can be determined to within 50 mm when stopped. When the plug has stopped in the target position a command by the operator from the surface switches the beacon transmitter off such that the isolation operation can proceed using Command Mode. GRAPHIC 2 COMMUNICATION MODE (BELOW)
Command - telemetry Commands
initiated by the operator are generated by his PC in RS232 serial format
down the umbilical to the Subsea Control Unit. There they are converted
into a special code which is transmitted through the pipewall to be
received, decoded and converted back to RS232 before being fed to the
plug system computer for execution by the control system. The system is therefore truly "transparent" through the pipewall and completely operator interactive. The maximum bit data rate which can be sent by any ELFEM means is a function of the frequency of the carrier as defined in the Shannon Equations. Where only low data rates are required then conventional "keying" techniques such as PPM/PSK/FSK can be adequately used. TUE has developed a unique data encoding system to achieve practical data rates. Outline Supervisor II Specifications Operating
